AEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?

The short answer

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) optimizes a website to rank higher in traditional search results, where users click links. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes a business to be named directly inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. SEO competes for clicks; AEO competes to be the answer, often with no click at all.

The core shift

For twenty years the search game was rank and click. You optimized a page, it ranked, a user clicked, they landed on your site. Answer engines break that loop. The model reads the sources for the user, decides the answer, and states it. Increasingly the user acts on the answer without visiting anyone's website. That is why click-through from AI-answer surfaces is dramatically lower than from a traditional results page. The value is not in the click anymore. It is in being the name the model says.

What SEO and AEO share

They are not opposites, and this matters. Both depend on:

Clean technical foundations: fast pages, crawlable HTML, valid structured data, a sitemap, and a robots file that allows the right crawlers. Both reward genuinely useful content over thin filler. Both reward authority and trust signals. A site that is well built for SEO has a real head start on AEO.

Where they diverge

The target. SEO targets a search engine's ranking algorithm. AEO targets how a model retrieves, weights, and synthesizes an answer.

The unit of success. SEO success is a rank position and the traffic it drives. AEO success is being cited or named in the answer, measured by how often you appear when the relevant question is asked.

Content shape. SEO tolerates long pages that build toward a point. AEO rewards the answer stated first, in extractable prose, because that is what the model lifts.

Off-page emphasis. SEO backlinks pass ranking authority. AEO cares less about link equity and more about consistent mentions and descriptions across many sources, because models weight consensus. A single strong backlink helps SEO; ten sources describing you the same way helps AEO.

The crawler problem. Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript reliably. Content loaded client-side after the page renders can be invisible to them even when it is perfectly visible to Google. AEO forces content into server-rendered HTML in a way SEO has grown relaxed about.

Which should a med spa prioritize?

Both, in sequence. The technical and content work you do for AEO strengthens SEO at the same time, so there is little waste. But the reason to move now is that AI-answer surfaces name only a handful of businesses per query, competition in most local verticals is still thin, and early consistent presence compounds. The practice that establishes clear entity consensus first becomes the default answer while competitors are still auditing their backlinks.
