What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

The short answer

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a business's content, entity data, and third-party presence so that AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews recommend it directly when users ask questions. Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for ranked links, AEO optimizes to become the answer the model generates.

How AEO differs from being "on page one"

Traditional search returns a list of ten blue links and lets the user choose. An answer engine does something different: it reads across many sources, decides what the correct answer is, and states it. The user often never sees a list at all. That changes the goal. You are no longer competing for a rank position. You are competing to be the source the model trusts enough to name.

For a med spa, the difference is concrete. A patient used to type "med spa near me" into Google and scroll results. Now they ask ChatGPT "what's the best med spa in [city] for lip filler," and the model returns two or three names in a sentence. If your practice is not one of those names, the patient never learns you exist. There is no page two to grind toward.

The mechanism: how models decide who to name

Large language models do not store a ranked directory of businesses. They generate answers from patterns learned in training plus live retrieval at query time. When a modern assistant answers a local question, it typically runs retrieval-augmented generation: it searches the live web, pulls a set of candidate sources, and synthesizes an answer scored for consistency, authority, and recency.

Three signals drive whether your business gets named:

Entity clarity. The model needs to understand what your business is, where it operates, and what it does, without ambiguity. Inconsistent names, addresses, and phone numbers across the web lower the model's confidence and push it toward a competitor it understands better.

Consensus across sources. Models weight agreement. If your practice is described the same way across your own site, directories, reviews, and third-party mentions, that consensus reads as reliability. A business that only describes itself on its own domain, with no external corroboration, looks thin.

Extractable structure. Content written as a direct answer, near the top of the page, in plain prose, is far easier for a model to lift than the same information buried under marketing copy. Structured data (schema.org markup) makes the entity and its attributes machine-readable on top of the prose.

What AEO actually involves

AEO is not one tactic. It is a coordinated stack: answer-first content on your own site, clean and consistent entity data everywhere the model can crawl, structured data markup, third-party mentions on sources AI engines trust (directories, editorial placements, Reddit), and review signals that describe your services in the language patients actually use. The work is to make every source the model can reach agree on the same clear story about your business.

Common questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO optimizes to rank links in a results page. AEO optimizes to be named inside a generated answer. They share fundamentals like clean technical structure and quality content, but the goal and the tactics diverge.
Does AEO replace SEO?
Not yet. Traditional search still drives meaningful traffic. AEO is the layer you add because the share of searches answered by AI is climbing fast, and those answers name only a few businesses.
